What is an implant?

Implants can be a great option to replace missing teeth. Do you wonder what an implant is? Let's look at a natural tooth. It consists of a crown, the part you see when you smile and a root, what is embedded in the bone. When we are talking about implants it has the same components. A crown, what you will see when you smile or open your mouth and the implant, the part that is embedded in the bone.

You can see the tooth and implant next to each other in this picture and implant mimics the root of your natural tooth. So, when you get an implant placed, you need between 4-6 months of healing time depending in number of factors like bone density, bone health, other medical contributing

factors, life style, etc. So once the implant has healed and integrated with your bone, then you need to get the crown part placed. The crown and implant is connected by what is called an abutment. After your implant is fully integrated, now we are ready to go ahead with placing abutment and the crown. And this makes your implant journey complete!
